Dr. Maria Pilar Safont Jordà

Dr. Maria Pilar Safont Jordà is professor of English Language Sociolinguistics at Universitat Jaume I, Castelló. Until 2011 she was the coordinator of the MA Teaching and Acquisition of the English Language in Multilingual Contexts (MELACOM), currently she is the director of the university’s Multilingual Education Unit (UEM). Her research is centered in the development of pragmatic competence in learners of English as a third language, factors which influence the use of an L3, and early multilingualism (2-7 years). She has carried out diverse studies on the acquisition and use of speech acts by learners of English as a third language and has published her research in international scientific journals, such as: The International Journal of Multilingualism, The International Journal of Bilingualism, and The International Journal of Sociolinguistic Studies. She is the author of Third Language Learners. Pragmatic production and Awareness (2005) published by Multilingual Matters, and has co-edited the volume Intercultural Language Use and Language Learning (2007), published by Springer. She has also directed research projects and doctoral theses on pragmatic competence in multilinguals. Currently, she is investigating the link between infant language attitudes and their multilingual pragmatic development.

Her most recent publications include, among others: (i) Pragmatic Competence in Multilingual Contexts (2011) in The Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics, Wiley-Blackledge; (ii) Early pragmatic development in consecutive third language learning (2012) in the International Journal of Multilingualism; and (iii) Early stages of trilingual pragmatic development (2013) in the Journal of Pragmatics. Moreover, she is a member of the editorial board for the following journals: International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, Open Applied Linguistics Journal, and International Journal of Research in ELT; and she is a member of the organizing committee of the International Association of Multilingualism (IAM). She collaborates as an external assessor for the scientific publications Cultura y Educación, International Journal of Multilingualism, and Journal of Pragmatics, and is also an expert assessor for La Agencia Nacional de Evaluación y Prospectiva (ANEP).
