Pilar Safont is Full Professor of Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism at the Universitat Jaume I in Castelló (Spain). Until 2011 she was the coordinator of the MA Teaching and Acquisition of the English Language in Multilingual Contexts (MELACOM). Her research interests involve the development of pragmatic competence by third language learners of English as well as factors influencing third language use and early multilingualism.
She has carried out various studies on the acquisition and use of specific speech acts by third language learners of English, and she has published part of her work in international journals like International Journal of Multilingualism, International Journal of Bilingualism, Journal of Pragmatics and System. She has authored and co-edited a number of volumes published by Multilingual Matters, Springer, Peter Lang and Brill. She is also a reviewer of the following journals: TESOL Quarterly, Modern Language Journal, International Journal of Multilingualism, International Journal of English Studies, among others. She has been associate editor of Language, Culture and Curriculum and member of the scientific committee of Journals like Intercultural Pragmatics and International Journal of Bilingualism and Bilingual Education. She has also directed research projects and doctoral theses on the development of pragmatic competence in multilinguals. Currently, she is investigating the link between language attitudes and multilingual pragmatics. She is also the President of the International Association of Multilingualism.
