Castellón de la Plana

About Castellón

Castellón de la Plana is a small city situated on the 112 kilometers of Mediterranean coast that make up the Costa Azahar (named after the orange blossom found in the province). The city itself is located between the sea and the mountain range of the Desert de les Palmes. It's one of the most mountainous provinces in Spain. The main industries in the region are ceramics, agriculture, fruit exportation and tourism. Its beautiful and well maintained beaches receive thousands of tourists every year. The origins of Castellón de la Plana are medieval, it was founded in the thirteenth century by El Rey Jaume I and located just beside the sea to promote maritime trade.

What to do in Castellón

There are several places of interest to visit in the city. For example, you could have a look round the Mercat Central (Central market) and then stop for a coffee in Plaza de la Paz or Plaza de los Pescadores. Other plazas contain historical and contemporary sculptures (Plaza Huerto Sogueros, Plaza Santa Clara, Plaza las Aulas). You could go shopping on Calle Mayor, Calle Colón or Avenida Rey Don Jaime. There are many great examples of architecture in the city, such as the Teatro Principal, the Correos building (post office) and the beautiful Art Nouveau buildings near La Farola and the Parque Ribalta, not to mention the quaint little houses, boutiques, restuarants and narrow streets of the Old City. Finally, no trip to Castellón would be complete with out a visit to the Cathedral and El Fadrí in the Plaza Mayor.

Where to eat and drink

The centre of Castellón has a number of great places to eat and drink, in fact it's one of the things that really stands out about the city. We would personally recommend: Mesón Navarro (just off the Calle Mayor), Como Antes (in Plaza Tetúan), Juan de los Palotes (in Calle Campoamor), Il Fragolino (in Calle de Cervantes), and Ernesto or La Necora (both in Las Tascas just off the Plaza Santa Clara). Or you could just go and explore the local tascas and tavernas, you won't be disappointed!
